Yes on Grays Harbor Fire District 12 Levy
Press Release January 18, 2013
Supporters Organize to Save Ambulance Service Surrounding McCleary.
Grays Harbor Fire District 12 covers areas that surround McCleary, WA. In the November election 56% of the district’s citizens voted for the levy, but were 29 votes short of reaching the 60% yes vote needed to pass an emergency medical services (EMS) levy. This was the fifth time voters had failed to pass the levy. The levy would cost the average homeowner in the district less than $7 a month.
In early January, District 12 Fire Commissioners sent a letter to neighboring Fire District 5 canceling the contract for ambulance services effective February 1. This meant that starting February 1, thousands of people who live and travel through the areas surrounding McCleary, including parts of State Hwy 8 and Hwy 108, would be without help from an ambulance in the event of a car accident or other medical emergency.
Ambulance supporters are rapidly organizing a vote yes campaign. On January 10, District 12 Fire Commissioners held a public meeting. Approximately 30 community members and first responders attended and voiced their support for maintaining ambulance coverage. Grays Harbor Sheriff Rick Scott explained that a lack of ambulance service not only impacts residents of the district, it impacts everyone that travels through the district including law enforcement. In 2012, ambulances responded to 110 calls and preformed 37 transports in Fire Dist 12.
On Wednesday, January 16, Fire Commissioners held another public meeting. After hearing from Ambulance supporters, District 12 Fire Commissioners voted to run another levy in the April 5 special election. They also voted to temporarily continue ambulance service to areas surrounding McCleary until the end of April when they know the results of the levy vote. They noted that paying for continued ambulance service directly trades off with much needed fire truck maintenance and repair.
Jessica Bradley, a resident and ambulance supporter explained, “Now we just have to organize and pass the levy! We must be successful or come May 1 the areas surrounding McCleary will be without ambulance service. I am volunteering on this campaign because I do not want to see any of my friends and neighbors suffer or die because they can not get help.”
Ambulance Levy Yes supporters are meeting on Thursday, January 24 at 6:30 PM at the McCleary Community Center 726 W Simpson Avenue. Come share your ideas and learn what you can do to save our ambulance in the areas surrounding McCleary. On face book “Yes On Fire District 12 Levy”

McCleary
If a town has been kicked in the teeth more than McCleary lately, I don’t know where it is. Store after store, banks, even their health care all deserted the town. It was getting pretty grim. Utter panic should have happened. Instead... (read more at Montesano Today)
