My own personal thoughts and understandings on the matter:
Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Federal Laws So no matter what happens in Washington state concerning 1-502 or medical marijuana (two separate issues) - for now the fact remains that federally marijuana is a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
The Washington State Medical Use of Marijuana Act is vastly misunderstood, many people believe that medical marijuana = legal. It doesn't - qualifying patients can still be searched, arrested, jailed, prosecuted. If the qualifying patient can prove they've complied with the Act requirements then they have an affirmative defense to the criminal charges.
