Capitol Forest - Grants Awarded
Grants awarded by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Funding Board include:
Washington State Department of Natural Resources Grant Awarded: $168,000 Maintaining Capitol Forest Off-Road Vehicle Trails
The Department of Natural Resources will use this grant to maintain 87 miles of ORV trail, two trail heads, one novice area, and an ORV campground in the Capitol State Forest. High use, clay soils, and crossings of salmon-bearing streams means the motorized trails in the forest require ongoing, intensive maintenance to ensure a safe, fun experience for visitors and protection of the environment. Crews will shape the trail surface, harden small sections of trail by laying crushed rock or concrete grid blocks, maintain drainage structures, remove overgrown brush, and inspect bridges. Work will be done by department staff, Washington Conservation Corps and prison crews, volunteers, and clubs. The department will contribute $112,100 in equipment, labor, and donations of equipment and labor. This grant is from the Nonhighway and Off-Road Vehicle Activities program. (11-1005)
Washington State Department of Natural Resources Grant Awarded: $142,000
Providing Education and Enforcement in Thurston County’s Capitol Forest
The Department of Natural Resources will use this grant to pay for a full-time education and enforcement specialist to patrol 172 miles of trail, 7 campgrounds, 5 trail heads, and 500 miles of forest roads in the 110,000-acre Capitol Forest. The department estimates that more than 800,000 people visit the forest each year. Forested areas can be denuded and fish bearing streams damaged if off-road vehicle use is not supervised.
The department’s enforcement and education program plays a major part in guiding users to respect the environment, forestry operations, and other recreationists. The grant will pay for labor, signs, supplies, and transportation costs to assist the specialist and volunteers in their efforts to educate recreational visitors about rules, policies, and principals of good stewardship. The program will identify and address health, safety, and resource damage issues and provide an in-field enforcement presence. The department will contribute $94,700 in labor and donated labor. This grant is from the Nonhighway and Off-Road Vehicle Activities program. (11-1007)

Fireworks
It is unlawful to discharge any common fireworks on any public property or Right of Way. They may be used on private property with that property owners permission.City of McCleary
(RCW 70.77.395)
ORCAA acknowledges that fireworks are a source of air pollution, but does not advocate a ban on the devices. Rather, ORCAA seeks to ensure people are aware of the potential health risk posed by exposure to the pollution from these devices.Olympic Region Clean Air Agency
To minimize impacts from fireworks pollution, individuals should reduce or eliminate their use of personal fireworks – these tend to concentrate their smoke near ground level. Instead, residents may attend community-sponsored aerial fireworks displays. These create pollution as well, but generally much higher above the ground where it can dissipate more completely before reaching people at ground level.
Folks who do set up fireworks on their own should keep the devices well clear of buildings and combustible materials (including vegetation). Besides the health risks from the air emissions of fireworks, the devices also pose serious fire-safety risks. They must also be careful when disposing of the debris afterwards. After dousing the paper and plastic with water (to reduce risks of fire), the waste material should be disposed of with your garbage. The waste should never be burned – not only does state law prohibit burning the material, but the colorful wrappings contain chemicals that could release additional dangerous toxics into the air if burned.

Thursday McCleary

This has been an unusually cold spring season. Now it is June 2nd and I still haven't been able to shut the house heat off for more than a few hours. But we here in this region know our rain and our cold - we are hardy souls. Life continues.
Even in this rain, maybe because of rain, McCleary has its own beauty. Colorful rhodies are finally blooming. Lilacs too. Lush green of new growth is everywhere.
This holiday weekend I wandered around town with a friend and the wonderful smell of barbecue was everywhere. Someone out there has a great garlicky recipe I want to get, or maybe I just want to dine on the result. It was heart warming to see all the families out playing and enjoying.
I treated myself to breakfast out this morning at the Rain Country restaurant. I really like the place. It is always a good sign when a local restaurant has regulars, customers that eat there often, maybe even meeting daily with friends for coffee.
And now there is just a wee bit of clearing in the sky with a promise of possible sun. Imagine that. Might be time to open up our doors and get out into the warmth while we can.
Hope you all are having a great Thursday.
