My Dad, Bill Willis, spent his first 12 years in The Cumberland Mountains of Virginia, where he served as a lookout for his older relatives who were engaged in the fine art of making spirits. Another bunch of my Willis relatives down in Pacific County during the first half of the 20th century carried on the Virginia tradition as well. The moonshine I encountered while on a visit to kin back in Dickinson County, Virginia smelled like paint thinner, but I understand in the old days the family proudly made a high quality product and had it down to a fine science.
